General Summary

The Business Writing Skills workshop trains writers in how to structure explicitly clear e-mail, memos, letters, and reports. The workshop does not teach grammar. Grammar requires training over time using the trainee’s documents as the basis. We recommend the online course, BWC110 Basic Writing Skills Tutorial for training in grammar.

Fees:

$2,375 per day professional fee. Travel expenses are not part of this contract and will be the responsibility of the end user.

Robert Craig Hogan, Ph.D., director of the Business Writing Center, with 35 years’ experience in teaching writing, author of Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century

Length:

1-day or 2-days, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with one hour for lunch

Content:

The basic outline of the workshop follows. Participants receive a copy of the book, Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century, on which the workshop is based.

Plan and organize every document.

  1. Deciding what to include in the document
  2. Responding accurately and completely to requests
  3. Organize so readers understand and remember
Build the communication infrastructure.
  1. Building teams and partnerships with clients
  2. Considering the reader's possible reaction to the subject and you
  3. Using an acceptable tone and level of formality
  4. Asking for and give feedback on the clarity and relevance of documents
Prepare readers to understand and act.
  1. Writing e mail subject lines using words that alert the reader to the contents
  2. Opening by explaining everything readers need to know to understand fully why they are receiving the document
  3. Opening with actions the reader is expected to perform, actions you will perform, and any critical information the reader must know
  4. Summarizing conclusions and recommendations at the beginning
  5. Writing a clear statement of the contents at the end of the introduction
