Using the Book as a Training Manual
The book, Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century, is a manual for competency-based training. It contains standards for explicit business writing and explanations of the best practices that attain the standards. The lists of standards have the page numbers of the matching best practice so a trainer can have trainees read the explanations of the best practices that will help them meet the standards.

Discounts for volume purchases are available.

The Business Writing Center strongly suggests that a company or agency adopt a set of best practices customized from the list of best practices in the book and require that employees meet the standards. While that will require training and careful monitoring in the first year of the effort, eventually the standards will become part of the corporate culture. New employees will be culturalized to the standards and, after a brief period of training or even just reading the book, they will learn to meet the standards. The result will be a workforce that consistently communicates clearly.

Workshops Based on the Book

The book's author, R. Craig Hogan, Ph.D., conducts workshops in explicit business writing based on the book. Participants receive copies of the book and an evaluation of their writing submitted within two months after the workshop to be certified as competent in explicit business writing.

Customizing the Book

The Business Writing Center will make the Microsoft Word files of the book available to businesses to customize for their use. The cover can also be altered to include the company's name.

These are some of the arrangements that are possible, although the Center will consider other arrangements that fit a company's interests.

  1. A company might alter the Microsoft Word files as desired and print copies of the book in-house.

  2. A company might alter the Microsoft Word files and have the Center do a final edit and proofread before the company prints the copies in-house.

  3. The Business Writing Center can alter the book using text the company provides, then edit, proofread, and print a run of the altered books for the company.

  4. The Business Writing Center can provide the name and address of the printer we use so the company can change the document, produce a camera-ready .pdf master, and arrange with the printer to have the book printed.

The Business Writing Center is open to other alternatives. Fees will depend on the arrangements. Contact The Business Writing Center at publications@businesswriting.com to have us help you explore alternatives.
